Wrawby Windmill, near Brigg, is currently without sails.  Two sails were due for replacement after decades of service in all weathers, however three were found to contain rot.  The owners, Wrawby Windmill Preservation Society, are repairing one sail and expect to put it, with the one good sail, back onto the mill this summer.  They have applied for planning permission to replace the other two rotten sails with old-fashioned cloth sails.  Although also known as common sails, these curtains of canvas on a wooden frame are now relatively rare, especially in this region.  This will see Wrawby windmill reverting back to the pattern of two spring sails and two common sails that it had a century ago.

National Mills Weekend for 2006 is Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th May.

The theme for this year is Wholemeal Flour by Natural Power.  Look for special events and activities at mills all around the country.  As part of the 75th Anniversary of SPAB Mills Section, 100 flagship corn mills will be flying special SPAB flags.

Burgh le Marsh windmill will be holding a Craft Fair.  There will be demonstrations and the oil engines will be running.

Green’s Mill, Nottingham will be taking part in the Mills on the Air amateur radio station at GB2GG

Moulton Windmill will be grinding flour with the newly installed engine and millstones.

Mount Pleasant Windmill, Kirton in Lindsey are offering free admission for all accompanied children.

This year’s member’s Summer Garden Party will be a barbeque at Tuxford Windmill.

Just north of the Lincolnshire Mills Group area, Howsham Watermill near York are now holding regular working days to clean up this Victorian folly and prepare the site to receive visitors.  See their website at http://www.rht.greenisp.org for details.

Obituary

LMG was very sad to hear of the death of Phil Davies, a committee member and a great friend of milling for many years.  He will be greatly missed by his family, our Group and his many friends.  We would like to extend our sympathies to his wife Ann and son Simon.

Sibsey Trader Windmill has all six sails once more. With five new sails and one very young sail, this splendid landmark is set to grace the landscape and grind plenty of flour for years to come.

Skidby Windmill is now working again after one sail was replaced before Easter.

Wrawby Windmill stands idle at present, with two sails under repair in a nearby barn, and two needing replacement.  It is hoped that the replacements will be common cloth sails, taking the mill back in time to the arrangement that she wore through most of her working life.

In late October 2005 Lindum Heritage are organising a weekend coach tour of The Wonderful Windmills of Lincolnshire, based in Lincoln, and visiting some mills which will be specially opened for the visit.
