All of the mills within the Lincolnshire Mills Group area welcome visitors, but they each have their own times and arrangements for opening. Most of the mills are entirely dependant on volunteers to open and operate the mill for the benefit of visitors, and to raise funds for maintenance. Remember that these mills are historic buildings, and not all of them have electricity, water or drainage, and so cannot open all year round, or for long hours even in summer.

Most mills have facilities for refreshments, but families are also welcome to sit outside with a picnic where there is suitable space.

A few mills work for demonstration only, other mill flour for sale. Please respect the hygiene requirements of these food-producing mills and only handle flour or grain that has been set aside for that purpose.

Mills were built as machines, with room for one or two workers, and not designed for visitors. This may mean that only small groups can explore certain areas of the mill. As a visitor you are inside a machine , so take care and enjoy a safe visit. Smoking is not permitted in any mills.

For history and other details of windmills in Lincolnshire, the information from the late Peter Dolman's survey has been made available by Lincolnshire County Council at http://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/windmills/

Entry charges to mills vary in line with the facilities on offer, but a family of four can generally enjoy admission to a working mill for about £10 and often much less. See our annual Mills Open leaflet, available from Tourist Information centres, mills and many other venues, for more information and a handy map.

Many mills offer special events for National Mills Weekend, which is the second full weekend in May each year.
